Major maintenance work has begun on a key railway line in north-eastern Hungary

Until the end of the summer, specialists will be working on a comprehensive refurbishment of a 45-kilometre section of the 100C railway line connecting Miskolc and Nyíregyháza, with the line closed to traffic. Replacement buses will transport passengers between Szerencs and Nyíregyháza until the end of the summer. The project also includes the modernisation of facilities at stations and stops.

The aim of the project is to remove the temporary speed restrictions on the section between Mezőzombor and Nyíregyháza and to restore the original line speed of 120 km/h over as long a stretch as possible. MÁV is financing the modernisation of line 100C from its own resources – writes the Magyar Építők.

16 kilometres of track are being replaced

According to the company, ballast screening and track realignment work will be carried out over a stretch of nearly 45 kilometres over the next three months. As part of the project – subject to the success of the public procurement procedure – the renovation of the nearly 200-metre-long Hosszú Bridge between Tokaj and Rakamaz may also go ahead.
Over 16 kilometres of track will be replaced and fibre-optic cables laid. As part of the works, four level crossings – two in the Rakamaz area, and one each at Nyírtelek and Görögszállás – will be modernised.
In addition to signal control duties, they also carry out maintenance on the overhead lines and safety equipment.

8,000 tonnes of crushed stone will be used in the construction

A significant amount of material will be used during the project: nearly 34 kilometres of track, more than 900 reinforced concrete sleepers, over 8,000 tonnes of crushed stone, and 4,000 metres of fibre-optic cable.
Around 200 specialists are involved in the project, working with high-performance track maintenance machinery, overhead line maintenance vehicles and specialised vehicles, including Unimogs.

The three platforms at Tiszai station will be demolished and rebuilt

According to information from MÁV, in addition to track maintenance, work will be carried out at stations and stops to repair the lighting, modernise electrical equipment and carry out maintenance on the points heating systems. Plans are in place to repair the waterproofing of the underpass at Miskolc-Tiszai station in August. During the works, tracks 3, 4 and 5 and their platforms above will be dismantled; following their reconstruction, the ceiling will be repainted.
