From July, Tokaj wine specialities will be bottled in trademarked bottles, further strengthening the Tokaj designation of origin – as reported to MTI on Friday by the Tokaji Wine Region Mountain Community Council.
The Tokaji wine region is one of the world’s best-known and oldest historic wine regions, whose reputation has been built over centuries on a foundation of quality and the protection of its unique origin. It is vital that Tokaji wine lives up to its reputation and represents reliable quality; the protection of its designation of origin is in the interests of every honest winegrower and winemaker, regardless of the size of their estate – the statement emphasised.
Only Tokaj wine specialities of impeccable quality may be bottled under the trademark
According to the Mountain Community Council, a major step forward in quality assurance is that, from 1 July, Tokaj wine specialities – essence, aszú, szamorodni, fordítás and máslás – will be bottled in easily recognisable, trademarked Tokaj bottles, the distribution of which is controlled by the wine-growing community council elected by the winegrowers.

Only the quantity of wine that has been authorised under the strict quality assurance procedure may be placed on the domestic and international markets.
In future, this Tokaj wine speciality – made from grapes of verified origin inspected by the mountain judges, approved by the local wine judging committee, compliant with product specification Tokaji, and inspected by Nébih to ensure impeccable quality – will be bottled in trademarked bottles in the quantities specified in the marketing authorisation.

The statement emphasises that maintaining a traceable bottle distribution system eliminates the possibility of abuse.
The announcement also highlights another key aspect of the system: the mountain community council will select glass manufacturers through a transparent process, meaning that Tokaj producers will no longer be at the mercy of any single manufacturer’s dominance.
The quality assurance system, established over many years and sealed by the trademarked bottle, serves not only to strengthen the protection of origin but also to promote fair market practices and reinforce the long-term credibility of the Tokaji wine region, according to the Tokaji Wine Region Mountain Community Council.
