Zemplén offers excellent conditions for cycle tourism, but high-quality infrastructure is also needed to make the most of them. For this reason, renovation work has begun on one of the worst-maintained sections of the Zemplén cycle route, a 1.2-kilometre stretch – announced Dávid Vitézy, Minister for Transport and Investment social media page on 15 October.

Experts from the Sátoraljaújhely engineering department of Magyar Közút are working on the cycle path between Pálháza and Mikóháza, but they are not simply filling potholes; rather, they are

Work is being carried out to repair a large area of road surface, during which an asphalt grid has been laid over 3,600 square metres; this is intended to minimise the reappearance of cracks in the old surface, thereby increasing the durability of the new surface.

A new 5.5-centimetre-thick wearing course of asphalt will be laid on top of this, using around 500 tonnes of hot mix asphalt. Following the asphalting, the resurfacing work will be completed with the restoration of the verges, which is expected to be finished by the end of the month.

The aim is not only to build new cycle routes, but also to make the existing national cycle route network safer, more convenient and more reliable to use. The Minister reported on this on Tuesday at the Hungarian Transport Conference, where the minister stated that a total of 980 kilometres of cycle paths managed by Magyar Közút are scheduled for comprehensive refurbishment over the next ten years.
