Tokaji: Successes and a record-breaking line-up at the VinAgora 2026 wine competition

The 27th VinAgora International Wine Competition ended with several successes for Tokaj. This year, 1,054 wines from 17 countries were entered in the Budapest competition, and the Tokaji wine region performed exceptionally well in several categories.

Samples were submitted from 17 countries, including Spain, France, Brazil, Italy and Australia. Among the wines entered, there were 239 foreign entries, representing one of the strongest international turnouts in recent years.

The competition was organised under the auspices of VINOFED, and the wines were judged using the 100-point system adopted by the OIV.

Tokaji Aszú was named the best in its category

New categories and new consumer trends have emerged

One of the key new features of the VinAgora 2026 was the introduction of the Commended award, which provides official professional recognition for high-quality wines that, whilst not having won a medal, achieved a score of 85 points or more.

The competition also provided a good reflection of changing trends in wine consumption. This year, for the first time, alcohol-free wines were included in a separate category, with 17 entries right from the start.

The ‘Varietal Focus’ programme also continued, this time putting Riesling and Merlot in the spotlight. A total of 123 wines were entered across the two categories.

At the end of May, the general public will also be able to taste the award-winning wines

The gold medal-winning and special prize-winning entries in the VinAgora category on 22 May are introduced to the VinAgora Prestige at a wine tasting event organised by the Winehub Wine Centre. Here, visitors will be able to sample not only the competition’s top wines but also the award-winning wines from the Commended.
