A unique exhibition and series of events opens on Saturday 26 September at the Tállyai Barka Galéria Hotel. To mark the opening, Tokaji Pap Miklós Népfőiskola shared a post.

What makes this exhibition special is that it presents Tamás Cseh’s life’s work and his early creative period across three spaces, approached from three different angles:

1. Performances abroad

The first section brings together and showcases Tamás Cseh’s performances beyond the border, with a particular focus on venues in the Carpathian Basin, where he performed most frequently during his career. This collection, which showcases his international performances, comprises rarely seen photographs, contemporary newspaper cuttings, concert posters, the singer’s own travel diaries, and other unique documentation. The exhibition also features a video compilation drawn from numerous surviving recordings of his concerts abroad.

2. A selection of photographs from my travels as a young person

The second space takes us back partly to the 1970s, but more so to the 1960s. Around this time, whilst Tamás Cseh was at university, he and his friend, the future photographer and ethnographer László Kunkovács, spent their summers travelling through several countries of the Eastern Bloc. We have selected photographs from their adventures – specifically from a trip to Poland and another to Bulgaria – to form the backbone of the exhibition, though we also encounter memories of a „dreamlike” journey through Transylvania on the walls.

3. Tamás Cseh’s prints

During his secondary school years, Tamás Cseh aspired to become a painter, and although he eventually became an art teacher, he produced a wealth of work between 1960 and 1970. At that time, playing the guitar and songwriting were merely a hobby for him; his creative years as a young man were devoted to the visual arts, but after meeting Géza Bereményi in 1970 and becoming a singer, the visual arts took a back seat.

The exhibition has been organised in collaboration with the MNMKK and the Petőfi Literary Museum – Tamás Cseh Archive.
